I work from home on a full time basis, so it is critical for me to establish a separate space for my professional activities. You may find, like I have, that you get more work done in a home office vs sitting on the couch with a laptop. Particularly if you are easily distracted which describes me nicely.
I started with a list of features that I wanted in my workspace before setting up my home office. I converted a spare bedroom into my office so in addition to listing my essentials (desk, computer, printer, phone), I also tried to include my wants (natural lighting, plants, hanging artwork, decorations, etc.). Although in my case plants are out unless they are hanging or on a high shelf. (My cat likes to eat them). After scouring the internet for some ideas, I came up with the following.
Here is a List of Some of the Basic Items You will Want to Include in your Home Office
- A Computer or Laptop: I purchased one from our Membership Savings Portal from HP at employee Pricing and saved hundreds. The selection and pricing was great,
- High Speen Internet: High Speed Broadband Internet is an absolute must! No one wants to look at that annoying circle holding up their work while you wait for a page to load.
- A Desk: Choose carefully. A good desk is a must for your workspace to be organized and productive. I purchased the LumiSource Luster 24″W Computer Desk, Silver/White from Office Depo. I was able to get it at a deep discount with our Membership Savings Portal and saved $150. It has just the right amount of surface area for my needs.
- An Office Chair: Go for support and comfort if you plan on spending several hours a day in it. There are a lot of good ergonomic choices out there. Remember, you will be spending a good part of your day there. I chose the WorkPro® Momentum Ergonomic Mesh/Mesh Active High-Back Chair, Black, which is super comfortable. Again Purchased through our Membership Portal and saved $150.
- Lamps or Natural Light Source: Because adequate lighting levels are essential to productive and comfortable work space. My spare bedroom has plenty of natural light, but you may need an accessory lamp if yours does not. You will want to avoid eye strain that can lead to headaches.
- A Printer or Multifunction Fax/Printer: Necessary for printing and faxing your documents. I Purchased this one for my Home Office at Significant Savings. HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Inkjet All-In-One Color Printer. It copies, scans and prints, everything that I need. I also purchased additional ink cartridges. There is nothing more annoying than running out of ink when you need to print something,
- Miscellaneous Office Supplies: Legal pads, printer ink, pens, pencils, stapler etc. I was able to find all of these at deeply discounted prices with our Savings Portal.
- All of the Rest: It’s time to address the esthetics with wall art, plants and anything else you want to surround yourself with. I chose some floral pictures in my favorite shades of lilac and teal.
Putting it all Together
I know that it seems like a lot. But when you break it all down and take it one step at a time you will end up with a space that makes you want to focus and get to work. You should feel comfortable and relaxed in your surroundings. Following this general guide you will be able to set up your Home Office to meet your needs.
